My name is John Lloyd and I am a Portrait Artist (BA Honours, Fine Art) currently based outside of London in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. My most recent commissions are from the hospitality sector including No.15 Great Pulteney in Bath, a new boutique hotel called Olives and Vines in the South of France.
The boundaries of painting excite me. Using oils and canvas together with more contemporary techniques, I aim to put my own perspective on something that's been done for centuries; portraiture. As a starting point, I photograph my subjects, In the same way as Francis Bacon, I feel that photographs are merely as records of my subject; I do not use them as an illustration. My work is primarily concerned about identity although my practice is predominantly based around the human figure. I am very much interested in the realness and intensity of the sensation experienced from the subject’s presence. My subjects tend to be familiar male; this gives me the opportunity to explore the character in depth. Recently I have begun to incorporate symbolic elements in my paintings giving a new dimension to the work. This excites me and opens up new challenges of which is how people use places and objects to define themselves. This in itself opens up hidden narratives within the work. I want my viewer to find my work thought provoking and form their own meaningful associations with it.Request a Bespoke Creation
