Casamance | Hotel Particulier

Hôtel Particulier is a heavy textured weave, and everything happens in the weft. Over a cotton and polyester warp the loom crosses yarns of different thickness: a satin yarn that gives a low sheen, a white chenille that lifts the surface and catches light, and a spun cotton and wool yarn that adds a dry, nubbly texture. The result is a plain that is anything but flat; it has the depth of a heavy tweed with the softness of a chenille. It takes its name from the stone-fronted mansions of the Marais.

The composition is 52 per cent recycled cotton, 44 per cent polyester and 4 per cent wool, woven in Italy at 140 centimetres wide and a substantial 740 grams per square metre, with a free match. There are 5 colourways: Tabac, Jaune, Ivoire, Bleu Glacier and Noir. Ivoire and Bleu Glacier show the white chenille most clearly; Tabac and Noir are the deep, grounding options, and Jaune is the one for a room that needs waking up.

This is an upholstery cloth first. We would put it on a large sofa, a pair of club chairs, a dining banquette or a padded headboard; it also makes a heavy, well-behaved curtain in a room that needs its sound softened. Because it is a textured plain it carries pattern well beside it; try it under a Silhouette velvet cushion or next to Saint Louis at the window. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

For making up: at this weight ask your upholsterer to check that the frame and springing can take a thick cloth, and to use a slightly larger needle. There is no repeat to match, but keep the warp running the same way on all panels so the sheen reads evenly. For curtains it is heavy enough to hang without interlining; a standard cotton sateen lining is enough, and a strong track is essential.
