Kentwell is a large printed cotton from GP & J Baker’s Canton collection, drawn with the density of an old document print, its layered foliage and flowering branches covering the ground almost completely. The horizontal repeat runs the full width of the cloth, so each width is a complete picture rather than a fragment. It is a design that takes over a room, and it should be allowed to.

One hundred per cent cotton, 137 centimetres wide, repeating 83 centimetres vertically and 137 centimetres horizontally, which is a full-width repeat, so every width matches its neighbour exactly. It is listed for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Four colourways: Ochre/Soft Red, Teal, Emerald/Blue and Blue/Green. Ochre/Soft Red is the warmest and most traditional, while Teal and Emerald/Blue read darker and are the ones we use in a room with limited daylight.

We use it for full-length curtains in a dining room or a study, and it is one of the few prints we would put on a whole sofa, where the density of the drawing hides everyday use. It also makes a fine blind in a small cloakroom. Pair it with plain linens and a self-coloured velvet. In a hall it will make the room feel smaller, and better for it. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

An 83 centimetre vertical repeat costs a full repeat on every drop, so measure the finished length and add accordingly. The full-width horizontal repeat makes matching straightforward, since the design simply continues across the join, but it also means you cannot cut a narrow width out of the waste. Interline, and let the curtains hang before hemming.
