Lizzo | Chantilly

Chantilly is a fil coupé jacquard sheer from Lizzo’s Les Jardins collection, woven in a linen, cotton, polyester and viscose blend with a metallic yarn running through it. A floral motif is woven into an open ground and the loose floats are cut away behind, so each flower sits on the sheer like a piece of lace, and the metallic thread gives it a soft glint rather than a shine. It is delicate by design: light comes through it and the pattern shifts with the sun.

The composition is 36 per cent linen, 27 per cent cotton, 24 per cent polyester and 13 per cent viscose, at 220 grams per square metre on a 330 centimetre width, made to be used turned with the width as the drop. The repeat is 118 centimetres along the roll and 55 centimetres across it. Lizzo lists it for curtains and sheers only. Three numbered colourways are offered, in a pale, tonal palette that keeps the metallic yarn subtle; order by number.

We use Chantilly as the sheer layer in a bedroom or drawing room, behind a plain lined curtain, for the daytime, with the outer curtain for the evening. On its own it suits a tall window in a room that is not overlooked, and it hangs best on a wave track. Pair it with a matt wool or linen and keep the rest of the room quiet. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

Buy the width of the window rather than the drop, plus one 118 centimetre repeat per curtain for matching the pair; drops to about 3.2 metres need no join. The cut floats on the back need careful handling, so use a curtain maker who knows fil coupé, and hem by hand. This cloth must not be dry cleaned: hand wash at up to 40 degrees, medium iron, and do not tumble dry or spin.
