Woodland Paisley is a woven jacquard, the classic teardrop paisley shape reimagined with ferns and leaves worked through it, so the motif reads as something that has grown out of the forest floor rather than an imported pattern. The viscose content gives the cloth a soft lustre and a fluid drape, and because it is woven rather than printed, the pattern shows as much in texture as in colour. At 94 centimetres the repeat is a large, confident one. The overall effect sits somewhere between a traditional paisley and a piece of crewelwork, which is part of what makes it feel so at home in an English country room.
The composition is 82 per cent viscose and 18 per cent linen. It is 138 centimetres wide with a 94 centimetre vertical repeat and a 46 centimetre horizontal one. It is recommended for curtains, loose and fixed upholstery and bedspreads. Three colourways: Indigo, deep and woodland-dark; Lovat, a mossy green that all but disappears into a garden view; and Ochre, the warmest and most autumnal.
We would hang it as a pair of curtains in a study or a sitting room that looks onto trees, or upholster an armchair in it against plain linen walls. A bedspread in Lovat with a wool blanket is a good, quiet use of it. Pair it with Beltane or a plain wool for the rest of the seating. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.
A making-up note: with a 94 centimetre repeat, order generously and allow a full extra repeat per drop, centring the motif at the leading edge of each curtain. The viscose content means it creases if folded, so have it delivered rolled. Dry clean only, and keep it away from direct, unfiltered sun.
