Azure is a heavier weight textured plain from the Threads Winch Design Indoor I Outdoor Textures collection, developed with Winch Design for spaces that move between inside and out. The surface has a fine, even grain rather than any motif, and the polyester construction gives it a slightly drier, crisper hand than a natural fibre, along with real resistance to sun and damp. It is a cloth built to look as considered indoors as it performs outdoors.

The cloth is 100 per cent polyester, 134 centimetres wide, with no pattern repeat. It is rated at a substantial 100,000 rubs on the Martindale test, so it is rated for upholstery at a genuinely contract-grade level, and the page lists it for loose and fixed upholstery, indoors or out. It comes in seven colourways, Snow, Oyster, Cloud, Sand, Earth, Marine and Moss: Snow and Oyster are the palest neutrals, Cloud and Sand sit a shade warmer, Earth is a grounded brown, and Marine and Moss bring in a proper blue and a green.

We tend to use Azure on outdoor sofas and dining chairs, on a bench by the pool, and indoors on a window seat or a hallway chair where hard wear is a fact of life. It pairs well with the plainer weaves from the same Winch Design collection and with teak, stone and powder-coated metal. Sold by the half metre; order a sample to see it in your own light.

With no repeat, quantities are simple, but keep the weave direction consistent across every panel and cut all pieces for one piece from the same bolt. Dry clean professionally rather than wash, and do not bleach or iron it; use a solution-dyed thread and outdoor foam if the piece is going to live outside for the season.
