Marquis de Pierre is a monochrome adaptation of the Chinese painting Birds and Butterflies, printed from wooden blocks at the Royal Oberkampf Manufactory in Jouy-en-Josas around 1775. It is a perfect illustration of the chinoiserie taste of the second half of the eighteenth century, and the single-tone treatment is what makes it usable now: the drawing does all the work, reading almost as engraving, and the effect is scholarly rather than theatrical.
